“Nine-ball scoring” can mean two different things. Standard international nine-ball records racks won. Chinese multiplayer chase games may award points for events such as 大金 (da jin), 小金 (xiao jin) or 黄金九 (golden nine). This guide explains the WPA format first, then shows how to choose a suitable display. Chase values depend on the agreed local format.
Lowest ball first is a contact rule
On an ordinary shot, the cue ball must first contact the lowest-numbered object ball remaining. A legal combination can pocket the 9-ball and win the rack before every other ball is gone. You do not need to pot balls 1 through 8 first. Special shots such as an announced push-out have their own provisions.

Separate foul decisions from the score
A standard foul normally gives the opponent ball in hand, rather than awarding a rack. A three-consecutive-foul loss has conditions, including counting within one rack and the required warning. The operator should not turn a cue-ball scratch at 2–2 into a 2–3 match score without first checking whether the rack has actually ended.
A race-to-five example
A wins the first two racks, so the display reads 2–0. B takes three, making it 2–3. A wins two more for 4–3. In rack eight, A plays a confirmed legal combination into the 9 and wins 5–3. Enter one outcome per rack. Ordinary pots and changes of turn do not alter the match total.
Agree the chase values before a multiplayer game
For a two-to-four-player chase game, agree event names, triggers, who gains or loses points, and any multipliers. An online value chart is not a universal rulebook. Before playing, work through one example for each event: if A completes it, what happens to B and C? Confirm the same interpretation with every player.
- Standard nine-ball: agree the race target and break format, then record racks won.
- Chase play: check that the available events and values match your table’s agreement.
- Disputes: keep the current total until the ruling is settled.
- After play: save the format, participants and final scores together so the numbers remain understandable.
Set up your scoreboard
For standard nine-ball, manually add one to the rack winner on the generic billiards board. Do not substitute chase-event values for rack totals.
